Supporting Families Starts With Supporting Birth

Across the country, families are facing a worsening maternal health crisis. Rising rates of complications, preventable poor outcomes, and a disregard for each family’s individual values leave too many birthing people without the safe, respectful care they deserve. In rural communities, the closure of labor and delivery units has created “maternity care deserts,” forcing families to travel long distances—or give birth without adequate support. This problem has hit our community directly with the imminent closing of Centra Southside’s OB/GYN services in Farmville.

Midwifery care is a powerful part of the solution. Rooted in evidence-based practice, relationship-centered support, and respect for each person’s autonomy, midwives provide individualized care that honors families’ values, cultural backgrounds, and their right to be fully involved in their care. Research consistently shows that midwifery models improve outcomes, increase satisfaction, and strengthen community health—especially where access is limited. At The Trillium Collaborative, we believe every family deserves this level of attentive, informed, and empowering care.
